Daily supplements of the omega- 3 fatty acid docosahexaenoic acid (DHA) have been reported to improve symptoms of eczema. Measures of eczema improved by about 23 percent over eight weeks after consuming the DHA supplements; this was associated with significant reductions in levels of markers of inflammation, according to researchers at Charite- Universitatsmedizin Berlin, Germany. A randomized, double blind, controlled trial showed that an eight week supplementation with 5.4 grams daily of the n- 3 PUFA DHA led to a significant clinical improvement of atopic eczema compared with baseline scores. The researcher recruited 53 people with atopic eczema (average age 26.6) and randomly assigned them to receive either a daily supplement of DHA (5.4 grams) or a control of saturated fatty acids with an equal caloric value. After eight weeks, the researchers reported that the severity scoring of atopic dermatitis (SCORAD) reduced from 37.0 to 28.5 in the DHA group, and by 35.4 to 33.4 in the control group.

Daily supplements of Vitamin C, at a dosage of at least 500 milligrams, may lower levels of LDL (bad) cholesterol by 5 percent, and subsequently reduce risk factors linked to cardiovascular disease, says a new meta- analysis of 13 randomized, clinical trials. Researchers also reported an 8.8 percent reduction in triglyceride levels. On the other hand, no significant increases were observed in HDL cholesterol levels, contrary to numerous epidemiologic studies that have shown Vitamin C intake positively correlates with HDL cholesterol concentrations. Subjects, mostly males, at an average age of 58.9, received their daily dosages for a period of three to 24 weeks. The studies were either crossover double blind design or placebo- controlled double blind design. The researchers stated that although [the observed] changes are modest, any small change can have beneficial effects on the incidence or coronary heart disease, especially in light of the low cost and absence of toxicity when supplementing vitamin C within the ranges of 500 to 1000 milligrams per day.
