Lysine is an essential amino
acid and is important for many functions in the body, and may have an
inhibitory effect on some viruses, such as Herpes and related viruses.
L - LYSINE & HERPES
L - LYSINE
L - Lysine is one of the nine amino acids required by humans.
When given supplementally, lysine has been shown to reduce symptoms of
the herpes simplex virus, including: (1) Frequency of outbreaks. (2)
Severity of outbreaks. (3)Duration of outbreaks: (eg, w/lysine, lesions
healed in 5 days or less in 83% of the individuals, without lysine, healing
took 6-15 days in 90% of the individuals.
Many patients experience an outbreak within 1-2 weeks after stopping lysine.
Most people benefit from lysine. Those who do not appear to have low serum
lysine levels. Patients serum lysine level above 165 nmol/ml, had
significantly less outbreaks than those with levels below this amount.
Normal serum lysine values: 82-249 nmol/ml. Apparently, the higher the serum
levels of lysine, the fewer the herpes outbreaks.
PREVENTION: 1 gram per day of USP Pharmaceutical grade L-Lysine
appears to be the minimum effective dose. 1-3 grams per day is typically
required by those who have had frequent recurrences for many years.
TREATMENT: 3-4 grams per day at the first onset of symptoms. Note:
Average dietary intake of Lysine is approximately 5-8 g/d.
TOXICITY: None of the studies utilizing lysine for herpes reported
any toxicity effects. Lysine has been shown to be nontoxic at doses up to 40
grams per day.
RATIONALE FOR THE USE OF LYSINE IN THE TREATMENT OF HERPES: When
herpes simplex virus infects a cell, the cell begins to synthesize the
virus-specific proteins in Arginine and low in lysine. Lysine has been shown
to inhibit the growth of the herpes virus in vitro, while arginine was found
to not only promote its growth but is an essential nutrient for the
replication of this virus. Consequently, lysine inhibits the growth of the
arginine-dependent herpes virus. Lysine's inhibitory effect appears to be
due to decreasing arginine's transport into cells since these two amino
acids compete fro the same transport system.
Directions: 1-6
capsules per day, or as needed, with water or fruit juice. 2-6 capsules per
day is required by those who have had frequent recurrences of herpes and
viral outbreaks for many years. Do not take with milk products. Take at
least 30-60 minutes before meals. Vitamins and Minerals are recommended,
such as Montiff Vita Minz Plus and B Complete or B Long, for proper
metabolism.
